Unmaintained Swimming Pools
Unmaintained swimming pools are one of the most significant sources of mosquito production in our communities. A single neglected pool can produce up to 3 million mosquitoes capable of transmitting West Nile virus in just one month.
These mosquitoes don’t stay in one yard, they can travel and impact entire neighborhoods, posing a serious public health risk.
How We Help
The Merced County Mosquito Abatement District actively conducts surveillance throughout the county to locate unmaintained swimming pools.
When an unmaintained pool is identified, our technicians treat the water to prevent mosquitoes from developing.
Treated pools may still appear green, but they will no longer produce disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Is Your Pool Turning Green?
If your pool is not properly maintained, it can quickly produce millions of disease causing mosquitoes. You have a few options:
- Drain the pool (when appropriate and safe to do so)
- Maintain and treat the water with proper chemicals
- Contact the Merced County Mosquito Abatement District for assistance
Taking action early helps protect not only your household, but your entire community.
