Public Relations Program

The Merced County Mosquito Abatement District is committed to protecting public health through education, outreach, and community engagement. By providing residents with accurate, timely information about mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases, we empower our community to take an active role in prevention and protection.

Community Outreach

Throughout mosquito season, District staff engage with residents through a variety of outreach efforts, including:

  • Presentations for community groups and organizations
  • Booths and exhibits at county fairs, community events, and public gatherings
  • Educational content on social media
  • Interviews with local radio, television, and news outlets
  • Press releases and public notifications regarding mosquito activity and disease surveillance

These efforts help keep the public informed about current mosquito issues, emerging disease threats, and practical steps residents can take to protect themselves and their families.

Third Grade Mosquito Education Program

Each winter, the District's education team visits third-grade classrooms throughout Merced County to deliver an interactive mosquito education program. This one-hour presentation introduces students to:

  • The mosquito life cycle
  • Mosquito-borne diseases
  • Personal protection and prevention methods
  • The importance of eliminating mosquito sources around the home

Students participate in a hands-on classroom activity that incorporates science, math, art, and writing, helping reinforce key concepts in an engaging and memorable way. Every student receives small educational prizes for completing the program.

By teaching children how mosquitoes affect public health and how individual actions can make a difference, we help build lifelong habits that benefit both families and neighborhoods. These students become informed stewards of their homes and communities, carrying these lessons with them as they grow.

The District provides this program free of charge to all public schools in Merced County. During the 2025–2026 school year, 42 elementary schools participated in the program, allowing District educators to reach approximately 3,600 students throughout the county.

Supporting Schools and Future Careers

In addition to classroom education, District staff participate in school agriculture days, career fairs, and other educational events throughout the county. These opportunities allow students to learn about public health, environmental science, mosquito control operations, and the career paths that support these essential services.
